Car battery in UPS: why it will die in a year and what to choose instead

Why you can't use a car battery for a UPS and a comparison of reliable sealed AGM and GEL batteries

When you buy an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), the battery is like high-quality gasoline for a car. You can connect anything, but the question is how far you will go and whether expensive equipment will burn out. In this article, we, as specialists with vast engineering experience, will figure out which batteries really work in conjunction with inverters, and which ones are just a waste of money.

1. Car battery in the apartment: Why is this a critical error?

This is the most popular attempt to "save money". It seems that everything is simple: a car battery is cheap, capacious and understandable. But if you plan to put it in a room or office, there are three serious engineering "BUT":

  • Toxic and explosive fumes: During the charging cycle, a classic car (starter) battery releases hydrogen and sulfuric acid vapors. In a closed apartment, this is not just an unpleasant smell, but a real danger to the health of your family.
  • He is terrified of deep discharges: A car battery is designed to deliver a huge starting current in 2 seconds (to start the engine) and immediately receive a charge from the car's generator. If you run it "down" with a heating boiler or router just 5–10 times, the plates inside will simply crumble, and it will no longer hold capacity.
  • Actual service life: In the cyclical light off mode, the usual automobile The battery rarely survives more than one season. The savings are wasted.

2. AGM, GEL or LiFePO4: Which battery to choose for a UPS?

For operation inside residential premises, completely sealed batteries have been created that are maintenance-free, do not emit harmful gases and are 100% safe. Let's analyze the three main technologies that are presented in the range Electro-Shop.

AGM batteries (Golden mean)

Sealed AGM battery 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle for uninterruptible power supply systems for household appliances

In such batteries (for example, from a well-known brand Energy) liquid electrolyte is absorbed in special fiberglass mats. They quickly accept a charge, are resistant to vibrations and have a service life of about 5–7 years with proper operation. This is an ideal choice in terms of price/quality ratio for uninterruptible power supply systems for boilers and small household appliances.

Gel (GEL) batteries (Premium standard among lead-acid batteries)

Professional GEL 12V 100Ah deep discharge gel battery for uninterrupted power supply of the heating boiler

Here, the electrolyte is converted into a thick jelly state using silicon dioxide. They withstand deep discharges much better (up to 70-80% without critical consequences) and are restored even if the device has been discharged for a long time. This is a top solution for sensitive boards of gas and solid fuel boilers, pumps and solar stations.

LiFePO4 — Lithium Iron Phosphate (Future Technology)

Long-lasting lithium iron phosphate battery LiFePO4 12V 100Ah with built-in BMS for reliable uninterrupted power supply to the boiler and the house

The most modern, lightweight and durable batteries. They withstand more than 3000–4500 full discharge cycles (AGM — about 400). They do not lose capacity, charge 3-4 times faster than lead-acid ones and give honest current to the last percent. If the budget allows, this is an unalternative option that is purchased once every 10 years.

3. How to easily calculate the operating time of equipment on battery power?

So that you don't guess on coffee grounds, engineers Electro-Shop prepared a simple working formula for calculating the autonomy of the system:

Operating time (hours) = (Battery capacity in Ah × Voltage 12V × 0.85) ÷ Equipment power in W

The coefficient of 0.85 is the average efficiency of a modern inverter, since some energy is always spent on converting current from 12V to 220V.

Real calculation example:
You have a branded kit from a popular inverter (e.g., Volt Polska sinusPRO-500E) and powerful Energia battery 100Ah. You connect a modern double-circuit heating boiler to it, which consumes an average of 100 watts.
We count: (100 Ah × 12V × 0.85) ÷ 100 W = 10.2 hours continuous operation of the heating system.

🛠 DETAILED DISASSEMBLY: FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Can batteries of different capacities be connected to the same UPS?

If you have one inverter, one battery (or the same group) is connected to it. The main thing is to check the characteristics of the UPS. If you have a compact UPS, its built-in charger may have a current of only 2–4A. It simply will not be able to physically «pump» and charge a huge 100–200Ah battery, and it will constantly be in a state of undercharge, which will quickly kill it.

What kind of battery is needed for a gas boiler?

For a gas boiler, a correct sinusoid (pure sine) is critically important from inverter and reliable battery type GEL or AGM with a capacity of 65Ag to 100Ag. It is strictly forbidden to use ordinary car batteries here - the boiler's automation is very sensitive to voltage drops, and you definitely don't need acid vapors in the kitchen or boiler room.

How to properly store and operate a UPS battery so that it lasts a long time?

Modern sealed batteries do not require topping up with distillate, but they do like proper care. First, never leave the battery completely discharged in a cold room. Second, do not place it close to radiators - overheating above 30°C accelerates the degradation of the plates inside. Keep it in constant buffer mode (connected to a smart UPS), and it will take care of its condition.

What does a “fresh battery” mean and why is it important?

Lead-acid batteries have a self-discharge property. If a battery has been stored in an unheated warehouse for more than a year without being recharged, the process of sulfation begins - the plates become covered with plaque, and the device permanently loses part of its capacity even before the first purchase.
