Security and Video Surveillance

Smart security cameras with AI: face and license plate recognition, TOP choice

Smart security cameras with AI have long ceased to be just «eyes» on the facade. Today, they are a full-fledged tool that not only records events, but also analyzes them: cuts off unnecessary alarms, recognizes people, cars, license plates, distinguishes a person from a shadow or a branch moving in the wind. That is why intelligent video surveillance has become especially relevant for private houses, apartments, warehouses, shops and parking lots.

In practice, the difference between a regular camera and camera with facial recognition colossal. The first simply stores video, while the second can create scenarios: report the appearance of a stranger at the gate, open access for "its" staff, create a list of visits, or search for a specific episode in the recording by face or license plate. For the owner, this means fewer false alarms and a faster response to a real threat.

The demand for smart security cameras has also increased because users are tired of chaotic notifications. If the camera reacts to every insect, change in lighting or cat flying by, its benefit is minimal. A modern system must have high-quality motion detection, be able to "see" the context of the event and, if necessary, integrate with a UPS, inverter or backup power to avoid losing control during power outages.

This is especially important for Ukrainian conditions: unstable network, communication interruptions, courtyards with poor lighting, difficult weather conditions, temperature changes. Therefore, the right choice of camera is not only about megapixels, but also about AI algorithms, sensor sensitivity, optics quality, power supply, storage architecture, and reliability in real conditions.

What modern smart security cameras with AI can do

Smart security camera with AI

The main advantage of AI in a camera is real-time frame analysis. A conventional system starts recording at any pixel change, while a smart security camera works according to scenarios. It can determine that it is a person in front of it, and not a cat, a car, a bicycle or a swaying treetop. This significantly reduces the number of false alarms, which most often annoy the user and force them to turn off notifications later.

For a private house, perimeter security functions are very useful: a virtual line, the crossing of which triggers an alert, determining the entrance to the territory, zoning the frame. For an apartment, a different logic is important - control of the door, corridor, vestibule, parking space or pantry. If a camera with facial recognition has local processing, it can work faster and not critically depend on the cloud service.

Separately, it is worth highlighting license plate recognition. Cameras with ANPR/LPR analyze the shape of the license plate, its contrast and the speed of the car. In real conditions, this is especially useful for gates of private houses, condominiums, parking lots, service stations and business facilities. If necessary, the system can keep a log of entries and exits, as well as open the barrier for "its" car.

Another strong point of intelligent video surveillance is event search. Instead of viewing 12 hours of recording, the user selects only those fragments where a person, car, or specific face was present. This saves hours of work for the security guard, and nerves and time for the owner.

It is important to understand: AI does not make the camera "magical". If the lens looks at the face at an angle of 45 degrees, and the license plate takes up 20 pixels in the frame, the recognition quality will be weak. The algorithm may be excellent, but no one has canceled physics: you need the right mounting height, lighting, distance to the object and adequate resolution.

That is why when choosing, it is worth evaluating not advertising slogans, but real parameters: viewing angle, focal length, night mode, WDR, matrix sensitivity, video compression format and power supply method. In systems where continuity is important, the camera is often combined with a UPS or a backup battery pack so you don't lose your recording when the power goes out.

Facial recognition: where it works well and where it has limitations

The concept of «face recognition» is often confused with simply detecting a face. Detection means that the camera has noticed a face in the frame. Recognition is a comparison with the base, that is, the system tries to understand who exactly is in front of the camera. This requires a clear frontal angle, sufficient detail and stable lighting.

The function works best at the entrance to the house, near the gate, in the hall, at the reception or in a controlled area where the person does not move too quickly. In a typical In installation practice, cameras give good results with a resolution of 4 MP, but for reliable face recognition at a distance of 4–6 meters, models are often more appropriate 8 MP and above, especially if you need to preserve a lot of small details.

Common user error — put a camera too high. If she looks down from a height of 3-4 meters, the face turns into a set of blurry lines. For recognition, it is better to install a separate camera at face level or provide a second angle that will capture the person as they pass. In many facilities, this is solved by a pair of cameras: one monitors the perimeter, the second - the person at the entrance.

Another problem is night mode. IR illumination is useful, but sometimes it "whitens" the face if the person is standing close. For a more accurate result in the entrance area, soft constant lighting or a camera with a high-quality color night mode often works better. For apartments, this is less critical, but for the street it is one of the key factors.

License plate recognition: image, speed, and angle requirements

A license plate recognition system requires a completely different approach than a camera for guarding a yard or room. The license plate must occupy enough space in the frame, be in focus, and not be exposed to strong side light. If the car is moving fast, a short shutter speed is important, otherwise the characters on the license plate will be "smeared".

For private entrances and parking lots, it is considered practical to install the camera so that the license plate can be read from a distance. 3–8 m. If the distance is greater, optics with a narrower viewing angle are needed. This is where many people make a mistake: they take a camera with a very wide view to see everything, and then it turns out that the number plate is not recognized. For ANPR/LPR, a wide angle is not always an advantage.

The quality of recognition is greatly affected by headlights, rain, dirt on the license plate, and side view. If the license plate is located at too sharp an angle, even an expensive algorithm can fail. It is better to install a separate camera in the entry zone than to try to get high-quality recognition using a universal panoramic model.

In business facilities, license plate recognition is often combined with automation: barriers, gates, event logs, and entry time control. It is also convenient for a home — the camera can store a list of family members' cars and record guests. But it is important to check whether the camera supports a local database or whether all functionality is tied to the cloud. The speed of operation and data privacy depend on this.

For most private properties, a combination of approaches works best: one or two smart security cameras monitor the perimeter, a separate camera monitors the entrance, and a license plate recognition model is used for the gate or parking space. This approach is more expensive at the start, but can be much more reliable in real-world conditions.

What to look for when choosing a camera: technical parameters without marketing traps

The first is resolution. For basic video surveillance, it is enough 2–4 MP, but for AI functions, especially face and number recognition, it is more often worth considering models 4–8 MP and above. However, more megapixels does not always mean better results: if the sensor is weak and the optics are dark, the picture will be grainy at night.

The second is WDR. This is a technology that helps the camera see dark and bright areas at the same time. Without it, a person standing in a doorway against the light can turn into a silhouette. For entrances, gates, windows, and parking lots, WDR is a desirable setting.

The third is the connection method. Wi-Fi is convenient, but on a real object a cable solution may work more stably or PoE. If the camera is powered by a single cable from the switch or NVR, the system is easier to maintain. In places where power outages occur, the camera should be connected through a backup power source or used 12V or 24V UPS depending on the configuration.

Fourth, local analytics. If AI works directly in the camera or on the recorder, events are processed faster, and the Internet is not a critical link. For facilities where privacy is important, this is also an advantage: not all data needs to be transferred to the cloud.

Fifth — temperature, housing protection and night shooting. For the street, you need a housing with a protection level of at least IP66 or equivalent, as well as the ability to work in frost and heat. If the camera is installed near a gate or on an uninsulated facade, these parameters cannot be ignored.

The sixth thing that is often forgotten is the archive. It is useful to have a memory card, NVR or NAS, and sometimes a backup of the recording. If the AI camera is installed on an important object, the recording should not be lost due to the failure of one microSD card.

Typical errors during installation and setup

The most common error — install camera so that it simply sees the area, without checking what exactly needs to be captured. For motion detection, this may be enough, but for face or license plate recognition, a specific observation point is needed. A camera that perfectly covers a yard may be almost useless for identification.

The second mistake is the wrong mounting height. For general control, a high-mounted camera is convenient, but for AI analysis of human faces, it is better to have a separate angle at the passage level. The third is ignoring lighting. If the entrance area is dark and the camera operates only on IR illumination, the recognition quality decreases.

The fourth mistake is over-reliance on cloud services. When the internet goes down, notifications may be delayed or not arrive at all. In such conditions, local recording and local analytics should be considered. The fifth is the lack of backup power. If the system is powered by the mains without a UPS, during a power outage it will stop working exactly when protection may be needed most.

In real practice, there was a case with a private house where the security camera worked well during the day, but at night it gave 20–30 false alarms per hour due to branches and headlights. The problem was solved not by replacing the entire system, but by fine-tuning the detection zones, reducing the sensitivity, and installing a separate light near the gate.
