Solar panels for the home without permits: how to stop praying for an outlet and start earning from the sun

If a UPS is a first aid kit, then solar panels are a healthy lifestyle. In 2026, this is no longer a toy for the rich, but a real way to survive in an unstable network. But there are so many nuances here that you can easily throw money away (or rather, on the sun, which will not warm your wallet).

1. What are panels and what do they do for you?

There are currently two main players on the market:

• Monocrystalline (black): The most powerful and modern. They work better in cloudy weather (relevant for our winter). It's like a modern injection engine - more expensive, but higher efficiency.
• Polycrystalline (blue): Good old classics. They are cheaper, but take up more space on the roof with the same power.

Advice from Electro Shop: If space on the roof is limited, take only mono. If you have a whole field behind your house, you can save money and put a field.

2. Bureaucracy in the Past: How the Government Simplified the Rules of the Game

Previously, installing a solar power plant (SPP) resembled a circle of hell: you had to collect a bunch of certificates, order architectural designs, and wait months for approvals, which were equivalent to a major renovation or reconstruction of a building.

Now everything has become radically simpler! January 28, 2026 In 2011, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a historic Resolution No. 77, which completely liberalized this process. According to the new law:

• Installation of solar power plants on roofs and building facades is exempt from any licensing or registration procedures in construction.
• You have more no need register declarations, obtain permits from state bodies or certificates of readiness of the facility for operation.
• For private homes, there is complete freedom of action: Owners of individual residential, garden and summer houses can freely install panels without a mandatory technical inspection. You simply buy the equipment, install it and use autonomous energy.

3. Hybrid, Off-grid or On-grid? (In human terms)

The system is not only black tiles on the roof. It is also an inverter, which is the “brains” of the entire scheme. According to the logic of operation, they are divided into three types:

1. Autonomous (Off-grid): The sun charged the batteries, you drained them at night. You don't need the grid at all. They are technically sealed inside your home and don't give anything out.
2. On-grid: It works under the "Green Tariff" or Net Billing. You dump excess energy into the network and get paid for it. But such systems require an official connection, paperwork from Oblenergo, and replacing the meter with a bidirectional one. And most importantly, when there is no light in the general network, it also goes out (this is built-in protection).
3. Hybrid (Top choice): It can do everything. It can dump into the network (if the documents are drawn up), charge batteries, and work when the whole city is in the dark. These are the systems we recommend installing for most customers now.

4. The main engineering rule: No export and zero leakage

Since most people are now installing solar stations purely “for themselves” in order to gain quick energy independence without approval from Oblenergo, the main technical requirement for such a system is absolute absence of leakage of generated current into the external network.

To do this, a special smart sensor is installed in the system together with the hybrid inverter — Smart Meter (limiter or zero export meter). It monitors the power balance in real time. For example, if the sun is producing 3 kW and your house is currently only consuming 2 kW, the inverter automatically reduces generation from the panels in milliseconds up to 2 kW or directs the extra 1 kW to charge your LiFePO4 battery. The current never goes outside your home under any circumstances.

⚠️ Why is a current leak into the network a deadly danger for electricians?
Imagine the situation: there was an accident on your line, the network is de-energized. The REM (Oblenergo) team arrives at the site, disconnects the transformer and climbs the pole to carry out repairs, being sure that the wires are “bare” and safe. If at this moment your inverter without a Smart Meter starts to “pour” solar generation back into the network without authorization, it will apply high voltage to the line. This reverse current can instantly kill a craftsman working on the wires. That is why Oblenergo imposes severe fines for such leaks, up to and including completely cutting off the house from the power grid.

5. How much energy does it actually give?

Let's not talk nonsense. One standard panel (approximately 2 by 1 meter) currently produces 450–550 W at the peak.

• In the summer, 10 panels will fully power the air conditioners, washing machine, and refrigerator.
• In winter, the same 10 panels will provide a minimum - just for charging. UPS and router operation.

6. Main installation errors

1. “"I'll screw it up myself": The panels have great sailability. If they are poorly secured, the first storm will send your money to your neighbor's garden.
2. Shadow from the chimney: Even a small shadow on one section of the panel can “plant” the power of the entire strip (string) on the 30-50%.
3. Cheap cables: There are high currents on solar lines. A normal wire would simply melt there. We are in Electro Shop We use only a special solar cable with double insulation that is resistant to ultraviolet light.
